How much debt do you have?

This isn’t a full fact find, Thrifty Family doesn’t give advice. We work with The Debt Advice Service who provides information about your options.

Who are Transcom Debt Collectors?

Transcom Debt Collectors is a debt collection agency that works for its clients to recover money owed.

It also goes by other names, including Transcom Worldwide UK, Transcom Debt Collection and even SLC Transcom due to one of its high-profile clients. You can probably guess what company that is by the title of my post.

A debt collection agency isn’t a bailiff company. The debt collection agency cannot send workers to your home to seize your possessions.

Who does Transcom collect debt for?

Transcom provides its services to a wide variety of businesses in different industries, but it’s most known for helping two clients recover money owed. The first one is to collect debts on behalf of eBay, often for unpaid seller fees.

There are scores of forum posts relaying this type of experience. Here is just one example of someone being chased by Transcom on behalf of eBay:

Their other big-name client is the Student Loans Company.

If someone isn’t repaying their student loan as they were instructed or has failed to provide the Student Loan Company with information, they could be chased by Transcom Worldwide UK.

This is also why the company sometimes gets called SLC Transcom or something similar.

Can you lower your repayments?

If you’re struggling to pay back your debt, then you might qualify for a debt solution.

Some solutions lower your monthly payments while others write off a portion of your debt

Is SLC Transcom legit?

Yes, Transcom is fully authorised and regulated to work as a debt collection agency. And they are members of the Credit Services Association. You can see their CSA profile here

But this doesn’t mean they’re a good company to have to deal with. There has been a lot of negative press concerning Transcom when collecting student debts, including an article in The Guardian

The article even discussed one case where the debt had been inflated because a graduate had forgotten to include a date of birth on one of the forms they needed to complete.

Can the Student Loan Company send bailiffs?

The Student Loan Company cannot send bailiffs to recover a debt unless they have a court order allowing them to do so.

If you don’t pay your Student Loan Company debt, the more likely repercussions would be:

  1. Penalty amounts being added to your debt
  2. Your debt is subject to an increased interest rate for non-compliance
  3. Foreclosure, which is when they demand the full amount all at once (but this is quite rare)

Can Transcom Worldwide (UK) take me to court?

If you ignore Transcom Worldwide’s request for payment, the company could assist their client in taking legal action against you.

For example, if you don’t pay your eBay debt, a County Court claim could be made, which could result in a type of court order called a CCJ being issued to make you pay. Only then could enforcement action be taken if you still don’t pay, which includes the use of bailiffs.

Debt letters from Transcom Worldwide (UK) Ltd

Transcom will usually get in touch with alleged debtors by sending them a debt letter. This letter can be quite scary and usually includes big bold and sometimes red writing. This is all part of their tactic to scare you into questioning nothing and paying quickly.

On top of these scary debt letters, they may also call you and send you text messages. However, there are FCA rules on the way they should communicate with you. They cannot:

  1. Harass you
  2. Contact you during unsociable hours
  3. Be intimidating or threatening
  4. Try to confuse you with jargon
  5. Disclose the matter with anyone else but you

How can I stop debt letters from Transcom Worldwide (UK)?

You can’t stop all communication from Transcom Worldwide (UK Ltd, but you can mitigate their communications.

The FCA states that debtors can provide debt collection agencies with their communication preferences.

You could ask them to only write to you and never call, but you would then be expected to communicate back in writing, which is always recommended over verbal communication so you can document everything.

How to respond to Transcom Debt Collectors’ letters

So, the big question is… how do you respond to Transcom and their payment requests?

Debt charities advise debtors to not ignore debt collection companies even though their powers are limited. By ignoring them you could just be making your debt situation worse and could run the risk of legal action being taken against you.

But the way you respond will depend on personal preferences, and whether you’re being chased for an eBay debt or a Student Loan debt.

Dealing with student loan debt

Unfortunately, there isn’t a lot you can do if you’re being chased for student loan repayments that you genuinely owe. Student loan debts don’t get written off over a short period, and there will be sufficient evidence that you do owe this debt.

In this situation, it might be best to make contact with Student Loans and start discussing your options. Remember, you only start making repayments after your income exceeds a certain threshold.

I’ve noticed on online forums that many debtors being chased by Transcom for Student Loan debt are those that have graduated and moved overseas. You can now report income to Student loans online and even set up a direct debit with them from abroad.

Dealing with eBay debt

Dealing with eBay debt is a little different. Unless you’ve decided to pay straight away, you could respond to their debt letters in two ways if applicable:

  1. Tell Transcom that the debt is too old to be collected
  2. Tell Transcome to prove you owe the debt

The first option is only available if the debt is at least six years old and you haven’t owned up to the debt or made any contribution to it within the last six years.

If this is the case, you can use the statute-barred loophole to tell them the matter cannot go to court so you won’t be paying. And it’s only five years in Scotland. You should get clarification on this before sending your reply by speaking with a debt charity.

Otherwise, you could ask Transcom to prove you owe the debt by sending them a letter to do exactly this. There are free letter templates online you can use. If Transcom doesn’t prove the debt but you get taken to court later, you could use the fact they ignored your request to potentially avoid a CCJ.

On the other hand, if they do send proof – such as a copy of a signed agreement with eBay – you will have to consider paying or agreeing on a payment plan. But you should also consider other debt solutions if you cannot afford the repayments or if you have multiple other debts.

What debt solutions are available?

There are lots of debt solutions you can use to get out of one or multiple debts. And many debtors don’t even know about them.

A couple of the solutions available will even write off some or all of your debt in the process, which I have already discussed on my Get Out of Debt page.

For a more personalised assessment of your options, always take advantage of free debt advice from a UK debt charity.

“It will only get worse” 😩

It’s cliché to say, but with debt it’s true; the longer you leave it, the worse the problem gets

There are straightforward and effective ways to deal with debt, but you have to know your options.

Fill out the short form to find out about the debt solutions that could reduce your monthly payments or even write off some of your debt.
