Can you stop debt collectors from contacting you?

No. Debt Collectors can legally contact you about an alleged debt. That said, you can write to them and ask them to contact you at specific times and in specific ways.

So, if you prefer for them to call you by phone at certain times, debt collectors must respect your wishes. If they continue to contact you regardless of your request, it would be seen as harassing you which is against the law!

What happens when the debt is yours?

You should contact the debt collection agency if the PO Box 17 Stockport SK1 4AJ letter is about the money you owe. Ask them to prove the debt is yours. Then check if the debt is statute-barred!

If a debt is at least 6 years old and it meets specific criteria, you can be made to pay it. In short, a statute-barred debt is unenforceable. Debt collectors can ask you to pay, but you can refuse.

Moreover, courts won’t issue a County Court Judgement (CCJ) on statute-barred debts. Although the debt is unenforceable, it doesn’t go away and could still impact your credit rating!

The following must apply for a debt to be statute barred:

  • You didn’t pay anything towards paying off the debt in the last six years
  • You never admitted owing the money in the last six years
  • There’s no existing legal action relating to the debt or CCJ against you

A debt is deemed statute barred if any of the above applies to a debt. So, if the letter from PO Box 17 Stockport SK1 4AJ relates to a debt from Moorcroft Debt Recovery, you can’t be made to pay!
