I was shocked to learn how much a friend with penalty points on their licence is paying for their car cover. In this post, I will look at how to find cheaper car insurance if you have nine points on your licence.

If you’ve got a conviction or points, getting insurance through a standard provider could be more expensive.

What Are Penalty Points?
Penalty points are endorsements added to your driving license for motoring convictions. The way that penalty points are handled is laid out in the Road Traffic Act 1988.
How Do Penalty Points Affect Your Car Insurance?
When you are given penalty points, you can expect the cost of your vehicle insurance premiums to go up. This is because insurance providers will see you as a higher risk.
What Are the Different Types of Driving Offences?
All driving offences carry a range of penalty points, and the severity of the offence drives how many penalty points you are given. Below, is a list of some examples of driving convictions that can result in you being given penalty points on your driving licence.
- Getting a speeding ticket for driving over the speed limit. The higher over the speed limit, the more points you will get on your licence for speeding offences for exceeding the statutory speed limit
- Being caught drunk driving due to an alcohol level above the limit.
- A driving offence related to not following instructions on road signs or traffic light signals.
- Dangerous driving or careless driving.
- Being caught using a mobile phone while driving, or even using a mobile phone while parked.
Can I Get Insured With 9 Points?
If you have 9 penalty points on your driving licence, you can still get car insurance premiums to cover you for driving on public roads. Although the insurance company that is providing the insurance will charge more, due to your poor driving record.

What Happens if I Get 9 Points on My Licence?
Getting 9 penalty points on your licence means that you have either been convicted of 2 or more minor driving offences, or you have been given the whole 9 penalty points for one of the more serious offences.
How Much Does Your Insurance Go Up After 9 Points?
As a rule of thumb, when you get penalty points on your driving licence, the cost of insurance premiums will go up by at least 100%. Making finding cheap car insurance more difficult. How much the cost goes up depends on the offence that resulted in the points being added to your licence. With three points having the least impact, six points having more impact, and nine points being even more expensive.
Can I Still Drive With 9 Points on My Licence?
Yes, if you have 9 penalty points on your driving licence, and you have not been banned for any reason, you can still drive your car as long as it is taxed and insured.
How Long Do 9 Points Stay on Your Licence?
Depending on the driving offence the penalty points were added to your driving licence for, they will remain on your driving licence for either 4 or 11 years. As an example, if you are given 3 penalty points due to a fixed penalty notice for speeding, the points would stay on your licence for 4 years.

Is It Hard To Get Insured With 9 Points?
It will be harder to find cheaper car insurance with 9 points, but it will not be impossible. However, penalty points affect the cost of your insurance, so you will need to shop around for the best deal.
Is 9 Points a Driving Ban?
Having 9 points doesn’t necessarily mean you are banned from driving. You may have committed a driving offence that gave all 9 points, or you could have committed 3 separate minor offences that gave 3 points each, for example.
9 Points on Your Driving Licence – What To Do Next
Penalty points stay on your licence until they are spent. So the trick to finding car insurance for convicted drivers is to work out the dates when points will fall off your licence. Some insurance providers won’t ask you about convictions until you renew your policy. And if the points expire before this date, it is more likely you will get affordable car insurance.
How To Get Cheaper Car Insurance With 9 Points on Licence
Every insurance provider is going to see you as a higher risk to insure when you have points on your licence. This will increase the cost of your car insurance for at least a three-year period, but more likely five years. There are a couple of ways to take the legwork out of finding affordable cover.
Firstly, you can ask an insurance broker for help, who will have access to specialist insurers who provide car cover for people who have unspent convictions for motoring offences.
The second option is to use a comparison site. The website will give you a list of different insurance quotes, and you can choose the one which suits you the best.
Can You Get Temporary Car Insurance With 9 Points?
Yes, you will be able to get temporary vehicle insurance if you have 9 points. But the same caveats will apply as finding annual vehicle cover. It will be more expensive.
What Cars Are Cheaper To Insure After Penalty Points?

How Do I Check How Many Penalty Points I Have?
You have to send your licence to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) when you receive a driving conviction. Any points you get will be added to your licence and printed on it. To check how many you have, just look at your licence.
Can I Reduce the Number of Points on My Licence?
There is no way to get points removed from your licence. You have to wait for them to become spent. You can then send your licence back to the DVLA and they will update it to show the accurate total of points you have.
