Looking for motor insurance? This page brings together information on comparing cover for cars, vans and motorbikes. A lower premium can help your budget, but the policy also needs to cover the vehicle, drivers and journeys you actually need.

Commercial introduction: Our insurance comparison links connect you with Quotezone, operated by Seopa Limited. MoneyNerd Limited, which operates Thrifty Family, may receive a fee or commission. Quotezone compares its panel of providers, not the whole market. We provide general information and introductions, not a personal insurance recommendation. Compare cover as well as price

Start with the level of cover you need, then compare quotes on the same basis. Third-party cover does not pay for damage to your own vehicle. Third-party, fire and theft adds protection for those named risks. Comprehensive policies generally provide wider protection, subject to their terms. A lower level of cover is not necessarily cheaper.

  • Check the compulsory and voluntary excess together. This is the amount you may have to contribute towards a claim. An increased voluntary excess can reduce the premium, but must still be affordable.
  • Read exclusions and limits, including any restrictions on drivers, mileage, commuting or business use. Check separately if you need delivery or other commercial cover.
  • Compare any extras, such as breakdown assistance, legal expenses and a replacement vehicle. Check whether they are included, cost extra or duplicate cover you already have.

Check the full cost

Compare the annual total with the total payable by instalments, including interest and fees. Monthly payments can spread the cost, but may involve a credit agreement and cost more overall. Also check cancellation charges and fees for changing policy details. A small difference in premium can be outweighed by different charges or excesses.

Give accurate information

Answer questions carefully, including details about the main driver, occupation, vehicle use, modifications, claims and driving history. Review pre-filled answers. Do not change truthful details just to obtain a lower price. Incorrect information can affect your cover or a claim.

Check your renewal offer against other options before it starts. Comparison services have different panels, and some providers sell directly. If you have unusual requirements or cannot find suitable cover, an insurance broker may be able to help. Ask about their service and any fees.

Read the policy summary and full wording before buying, and confirm when cover begins. If paying becomes difficult, contact your insurer to discuss support before cancelling or missing payments. For independent guidance, see MoneyHelper’s guide to car insurance.
