Don’t let Controlaccount fob you off with a verbal confirmation the debt is yours! They must provide hard proof that it is!

Make sure you send all correspondence to Controlaccount by registered post so you know they receive it. If you’re unsure what to write in your ‘prove the debt letter’, seek advice from a reliable source.

What happens after Controlaccount proves the debt?

If you get a letter from Controlaccount proving the debt is yours, knowing your rights can help you cope. For instance, a debt collection agency should:

  • Only get in touch with you at reasonable times. You can tell them in writing when and how to contact you. Controlaccount must respect your wishes!
  • They must never discuss your debt with other people which includes friends and family which is a breach of your privacy
  • Never apply any sort of pressure to make you pay which includes pressuring you to take out a loan to repay the debt!
  • Never pretend they have powers they do not have. For example, pretend they can take away your possessions!
  • Provide you with a reasonable and affordable payment plan
  • Pretend they are bailiffs (enforcement agents) which is against the law

Some debt solutions can:

  1. Stop nasty calls from creditors
  2. Freeze interest and charges
  3. Reduce your monthly

Would Controlaccount offer you a payment plan?

Yes. Controlaccount Debt Recovery should offer you a reasonable and affordable payment plan to resolve your debt. However, you must keep up the payments to avoid going back to square one.

If you’re unsure whether to accept a payment plan from the debt collector, seek advice from one of the debt charities. Their advice is free and could be invaluable when evaluating a solution and getting the best repayment plan!

Can you tell a debt collector to stop contacting you?

Yes. You can ask a debt collector to stop contacting you by writing them a letter. Send the letter registered post and keep a copy for your records. State when and how the debt collector can contact you.

That said, you can’t block a debt collector from reaching out to you. Unless they start using unethical and unlawful tactics!
