Are DG10 motoring convictions serious?

Yes, trying to operate a vehicle while on drugs is serious. Doing so puts your and others’ lives at risk.

There are also serious punishments for getting convicted with a DG10.

How many penalty points do you get for a DG10 conviction?

Conviction code Nature of offence Penalty points
DG10 Driving or attempting to drive with a drug level above the specified limit Between 3 and 11 penalty points

You can be automatically disqualified and fined for a DG10 offence, but if you’re not disqualified from the offence alone, you can be given between three and eleven penalty points depending on the circumstances.

These points could lead to a totting-up driving disqualification, which is when 12 or more points are given to you within three years. This is a minimum ban of six months, or one year if previously banned in the last three years.

Will points ruin my insurance?

Points Insurance increase
3 Points 5%
6 Points 25%+
10-12 Points 80%+

Will a DG10 endorsement affect your vehicle insurance?

Unspent DG10 driving convictions will affect your vehicle insurance. But driving convictions that are older than five years cannot be considered as part of insurance quotes. This is illegal.

How will a DG10 affect car insurance?

If you’re banned as part of a DG10 conviction your current insurance policy will be cancelled and you will need to wait for the ban to end to get back on the road and insured.

If you don’t get banned – or after your ban – an unspent DG10 conviction will increase premium payments and possibly excess. It might even cause some insurers to refuse you for a policy.

The hike in premiums will be determined by the number of penalty points received as part of the DG10 – and any other points you have on your record. The more penalty points you have, the more your premiums will increase from 10% to more than double!

How long does a DG10 conviction stay on your driving licence?

A DG10 endorsement and the penalty points stay on your record for 11 years from the date of the offence.

But the driving conviction is considered spent after five years, which is the important timescale when it comes down to getting insured again.

What is the cheapest car insurance with a DG10 conviction?

The cheapest insurance with a DG10 conviction isn’t the same for everyone. Many personal and incidental factors play into the quote you receive, so it wouldn’t be right for me to identify just one or even a couple of the policies out there.

But I can help you find the cheapest for you, by recommending one particular service that I’m not connected to at all.

Using a car insurance broker can help you find the best policies. This is more likely if you use a convicted driver insurance broker, which is someone specialising in helping people with convictions and driving bans. Their industry connections and know-how could secure the best deals.

How to find the cheapest insurance with a DG10 conviction

Whether your DG10 resulted in a driving disqualification or not, it can be difficult to get (affordable) insurance soon after. This forum post is a common tale:

So, what is DG10 car insurance?

Some insurance companies want to make themselves known to convicted drivers, indicating that they won’t be as expensive because they look at the individual rather than just the driving record.

To make themselves known, they often market their policies with the inclusion of endorsement codes, resulting in policies called DG10 insurance, DG10 van insurance etc.

Although this can seem like deception, these companies might really be cheaper than others, and they might not appear on comparison sites. So they’re worth investigating.

It can also be worth searching terms like:

  1. Insurance for high-risk drivers
  2. Disqualified driver insurance
  3. Drug driving insurance or DG insurance

Hold on… There’s more here!

Before you go looking for DG10 insurance or a DG10 specialising broker, it’s worth having a look at my longer convicted driver insurance post, which may have additional tips not mentioned above.
