What can BPO Collections legally do?
There are laws and the CSA Code of Practice that all debt collectors must follow when they contact you. The way a debt recovery agent behaves towards you is regulated.
In short, a debt collectors should show empathy and understanding when they reach out to you. It’s not always the case!
So, knowing what they can and cannot do is important when BPO Collections contacts you over a Sky debt!
Debt collectors can:
- Contact you about an alleged Sky debt, whether by phone, letter or in person if all other methods fail
- Discuss an alleged Sky debt with you discreetly and politely
- Ask you to pay them directly
Debt collectors cannot:
- Force their way into your home
- Pretend they have the same powers as court-appointed enforcement agents (bailiffs) which is a criminal offence
- Discuss an alleged Sky debt with your family, friends, employer, or neighbours which breaches UK privacy laws
- Clamp your vehicle or seize your possessions
- Use documents that appear to be court-issued although they are not
- Talk to you confusingly, using legal jargon
- Urge you to take out another loan to cover the alleged debt
A debt collection agency must allow you the time to consider your options and seek advice about your situation. They can’t force you to pay straight away although many use scare tactics to this end.
How should you deal with BPO Collection?
Getting a letter from a debt collection company can send you into a panic, whether you owe the money or not! So, when you get one from BPO Collections about an outstanding debt to Sky, it’s best to stay calm and deal with things.
You should first check all the details in the letter are correct. Then check how old the debt is. Why? Because debts which are at least six years old are statute-barred, if it is, you may not have to pay!
If, however, the debt is current, you should write back to BPO Collections and ask them to prove the debt is yours! It’s your right to ask this and debt collectors must respond.
BPO Collections can’t just ‘say’ they know you owe the money to Sky. They must provide you with solid, hard proof the debt is yours. For example, an authenticated copy of an agreement or contract you signed!
Don’t admit, sign, or pay any money over to BPO Collections until they’ve sent you the evidence you owe the money on unpaid Sky payments.
Plus, send them the ‘prove it’ letter by registered post and keep a copy for your records!

Can you stop BPO Collections from contacting you?
No. You can’t stop BPO collections from contacting you if Sky asks them to recover an unpaid debt. But you can dictate when and how a debt collection agency contacts you.
For example, you could write to BPO Collections limited telling them to contact you in writing only. Or you may prefer to talk to them over the phone at certain times of the day. It’s your right to request this and BPO Collections must respect your wishes!
If a debt collector continues to contact you when you asked them not to, it could be seen as harassment. Harassing behaviour is unlawful. You should complain to their head office about it.
