No, you shouldn’t ignore a Parking Charge Notice. There are better ways to deal with a Parking Charge Notice if you don’t agree with it. 

In fact, ignoring the ticket may cause you to pay more down the line. 

How much is a VARS parking fine?

VARS parking fines can differ in cost depending on the car park and location, but you will expect to be fined up to £100. Your fine is usually halved if you pay within the first 14 days.

There were regulations due to come into effect to prevent car parking management companies from fining motorists more than £50, but these plans have been shelved for the time being. 

Do I have to pay a VARS parking fine?

If you don’t pay your VARS parking ticket within 28 days you’ll be asked to pay even more. The only other option is to make a VARS parking fine appeal.

Can you be forced to pay a Parking Charge Notice?

You can be forced to pay a Parking Charge Notice if the car park management company takes legal action and wins a court order making you legally obligated to pay. 

This is where things get a bit murky. 

A Parking Charge Notice isn’t considered a real fine. I should add that Penalty Charge Notices from councils are considered genuine fines. But in the case of the former, these tickets are considered an invoice from the company for a service they provided. 

You pay a higher rate for that service because you didn’t adhere to the terms of service correctly. But because they’re not real fines, they’re not immediately enforceable. Private tickets only become enforceable through legal action. 

Some people decide to test their luck and ignore their Parking Charge and hope no legal action is taken. But doing so is risky because you:

1. Could lose your right to appeal
2. Lose your right to the discounted rate
3. Could have to pay more, including additional court fees

How to appeal a VARS Parking Charge Notice

The only method I could find to appeal a VARS Parking Charge Notice is to submit your appeal through the company’s online portal. 

There is no address published where you could send an appeal in the post. This is quite uncommon, so I would say to check your PCN itself – including the back – to see if alternative appeal methods exist.

What is the best excuse to appeal a parking ticket?

Your VARS PCN appeal will need a good excuse and probably evidence to back up your claims. I’ve already discussed eight fantastic reasons to get out of a parking ticket, but one of my favourites is the five-minute rule. 

The five-minute rule is a legislated rule that states a parking company cannot issue you a ticket if you overstayed by five minutes or less. However, this does include the time it takes to leave the private car park – not just arrive at your vehicle. 

How to pay a VARS PCN

The only published way to pay a VARS Parking Charge Notice is online through the company’s website payment portal. 

You’ll need your PCN number. If you’ve lost it you can retrieve it by emailing [email protected]. 

They don’t advertise any way to pay by phone or by sending a cheque in the post, which is quite unusual. You may find these options on your Parking Charge Notice itself.

You’re allowed to escalate your VARS parking ticket appeal if you disagree with its decision. 

As a member of the BPA, you can redirect your appeal to the Parking on Private Land Appeals (POPLA) Service. 

This independent group will make a decision and that decision is compulsory for VARS.
