Do You Have to Pay?
In some circumstances, you might have a legitimate reason not to pay your fine.
It’s a bit sneaky, but the last time I needed legal advice, I paid £5 for a trial to chat with an online solicitor called JustAnswer.
Not only did I save £50 on solicitor feeds, I also won my case and didn’t have to pay my £271 fine.

Is it worth appealing to the IAS?
Appealing to the IAS can be worth it for two reasons:
- You could have the parking ticket overturned
- You could buy yourself some time to save the money for the payment
However, if you do a little research online, you’ll read lots of forum posts from frustrated people stating that appealing to the IAS is a waste of time.
People do tend to be more vocal online when something hasn’t gone their way, and there are still some success stories posted, like this one:

But if you think your appeal is weak and you don’t have a convincing excuse, you may be better off paying the parking ticket within the first 14 days for a discount.
Or you could pay after your initial appeal if it was submitted within the first 14 days, to still get the 50% discount on the fine.
How do I appeal to the IAS?
You appeal to the IAS via their website using a special appeals portal. It includes many steps that give you an opportunity to state the reason for your appeal and supply evidence.

IAS appeal letter template
As part of the appeal, you will need to put into words why you are appealing. You can find AIS appeal letter templates for free online to make this easier, especially if you’re not confident in creating a good appeal letter.
How long does an IAS appeal take?
Once all parties have responded to the requests of IAS, the adjudication process will take up to 21 days.
The steps before adjudication will take at least 15 working days and possibly many more.
Despite this, there have been some claims online about a much quicker decision, like this one that took just one day:

I have no way of knowing if this was true and how it was dealt with so fast.
What is the IAS appeal success rate?
IAS appeal success rates aren’t published, so we don’t know how many people get their AIS appeal accepted.
But many sources online state that experts claim the IAS success rate is very low. This would collaborate with the many frustrating forum posts I read about IAS during my own research for this blog.

Alternatives to an IAS appeal
The alternative option to making an IAS appeal is to pay the ticket or ignore the ticket until court papers arrive, which they may not. Many people have gotten away without paying before.
Obviously, ignoring the ticket and waiting for court papers is risky, because you may have to pay even more money to get out of the situation later.
And if you were issued with a court order known as a CCJ, your credit file would be severely damaged. I can’t tell you what to do but ignoring the ticket sure is risky!
What are good parking ticket appeal excuses?
There are lots of good excuses to appeal private parking tickets, including the one mentioned in the forum post above about inadequate signage. My personal favourite is a rule that few people know about.
Parking companies aren’t allowed to give you a ticket if you’re only five minutes late to exit the car park (not just getting to your car!).
IAS appeal contact number
You can only communicate with IAS through a personal account on their website or by writing to them at:
The IAS
PO Box 662
Macclesfield
SK10 9NR
But you must not send any IAS appeal letter to this address. It wouldn’t be accepted.
